The City Girl

It has always been difficult for me to draft creative ideas in the segment for women. To think like a woman, you have got to live like one. Women live a happier life, they are a lot more fun-loving and they live in the present. When this project came to me, I wanted to say No, since it was outside my comfort zone. I took a few days to think of an idea and gave it a second thought. I couldn't think of anything. I started to brainstorm with my producer and then it hit me and him. We thought of a character who is a city girl and uses this cycle to commute almost everywhere and wrote a short ad like video where we showcase the things she does in a visual time span of 3 days. We had only 1 day to shoot. We decided upon 4 different locations to cover, each one at a distance of 10-12 kms from another. During the pre-production, I was using the app previs pro, which gave me the liberty to design the shots in the 3D environment for storyboarding. I took this liberty to another level when I used its artificial reality feature and took the 3D character out of the app and uploaded it in the real environment to see exactly what the shot would look like in a particular location. The character's mood was kept confident, fun-loving and energetic, the cinematography treatment was kept mid-paced and a lot of dolly in movements, the height of the camera angles were precalculated and was given attention to.

A New Kind of Therapy

Avon Cyclux - 'A new kind of therapy' was an idea which came to me suddenly when I was asked for a mountain bike video by Frenchfries films. I am a huge fan of the sport and it gives me the chills, so thinking of this concept was a piece of cake for me. The idea was very simple, set in the early 2000's, a 24-year-old urban-looking boy is watching a guided meditative therapy session on a fat vintage TV and he imagines leaving the room and going out for a ride on his new Avon cyclux mountain bike, but the sounds of the therapy running in TV follows the boy while he rides this bike up and down in the mountains and ends with establishing that his ride is his therapy. When I told this idea to my producer, he said we are doing it. During the pre-production, I was sure about what I wanted in terms of screenplay, production design, and the locations. I headed to Manali a week before the shoot and luckily we found our athlete there, but shooting in Manali was a very complicated task. Hunting down locations for the project was a problem, since I was looking for a wider landscape, however I found two locations with downhill trails. The first looked like a forest, the second was covered under the snow. During the shoot, for a downhill chase, we had to climb up the hill first, which took a tool on the crew since we were gaining altitude and carrying our equipment. Shooting in the snow restricts the camera movements and also the riding maneuvers, so we took small takes. A very important visual element in the film was to attain speed. I particularly shot the whole thing in 23.98 FPS for motion blurr, which added to film's cinematic value. I wanted to keep the texture of the image borderline vintage, so the footage was pushed in Davinci Resolve to achieve the desired look.
